Our stable includes Clydesdales, Percherons, Belgians, and a Shire. Their horseshoes are as large as dinner plates and they each weigh up to a tonne.

The gentle giants of Stanley Park are all draft horses, bred to be large and strong to carry knights in shining armour.

Although horses brought many people to the area and helped shape downtown Vancouver and Stanley Park when the city was being built, they were absent from the park for over 30 years when the Stanley Park Horse-Drawn Tours brought the tradition of horse-drawn carriage rides back to Stanley Park.

Our large trams take over 6000 work hours to build and are hand made with local, recyclable, and renewable materials wherever possible.

The horses have been featured in numerous TV shows and movies, notably “Bird on a Wire,” staring Goldie Hawn and Mel Gibson, and “This Can’t Be Love,” with Katharine Hepburn and Anthony Quinn, “Highlander” with Adrian Paul and Jim Byrnes, and most recently “Men in Trees” with Lisa Kudrow.

The Stanley Park Horse-Drawn Tours horses drink up to 33 gallons of water daily.

Horse-drawn tours have been part of the Stanley Park visitor experience for more than 100 years.

The Stanley Park Horse-Drawn Tours have a variety of carriages for any occasion including an elegant Cinderella pumpkin coach and an antique horse-drawn hearse from the 1800s.

Carriage rides depart every 20-30 minutes, daily, March 15 – October 31 from the horse-drawn tour kiosk beside the information booth in Stanley Park.

Dougie Glass, Resident Artist
Dougie works at The Coast Plaza Hotel & Suites in our Front Office Department. We are very proud to feature Dougie’s glass works in our hotel lobby display.

Dougie trained in the early 1990′s in Glasgow, Scotland whilst serving a three year apprenticeship involving cutting glass, installation and glass working.

His work involves commercial restoration of Heritage Buildings & Churches, glazing, and artistic work that has no boundaries due to the diversity of glass and its applications.

Now with almost twenty years experience, he is currently working on custom glass items; such as jewelry, awards, gifts, and also leaded glass.

Gallus Glass regularly shows at local fashion markets & cultural festivals in and around Vancouver.

Gary Johnston works at The Coast Plaza Hotel & Suites in our Security Department. We are proud to feature his sculptures in our hotel lobby display.

Gary is a self taught painter and sculptor. He began painting at an early age and decided if he was going to learn how to paint he would learn from the best teachers, the Masters.

Ten years ago a visit to Rome allowed Gary to marvel the marble statues created by the likes of Michelangelo; this created a spark which Gary had to follow. Once again he tried to learn from the great sculptors of the past.

The inspiration from the Masters shows when sculpting, as Gary only uses the traditional tools, mallet, chisels and files, and by using these tools rather than power tools, he feels that he can feel the stone and the stone will tell him where it wants to go.
